After a long wait, Sawe — the man who broke two hours in London — has finally had his world record ratified. World Athletics has recently certified a group of world records and one U20 world record.

Sabastian Sawe’s 1:59:30 at this year’s London Marathon has been officially recognised as the men's marathon world record. He is the first athlete in history to run under two hours in a record‑eligible marathon, shaving 65 seconds off the previous mark.

Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa successfully defended her London Marathon title in 2:15:41, lowering her own women‑only marathon world record of 2:15:50 from last year by nine seconds.

The ratified U20 world record belongs to China’s javelin thrower Yan Ziyi, who threw 71.74 m at this year’s Diamond League meeting in Xiamen.

That mark is the second‑best in history, just 54 cm short of the world record. Yan went on to compete at three more Diamond League meets, winning them all. Having just turned 18 and already with four Diamond League victories, she is indisputably a rising star in athletics.

Sweden’s Mondo Duplantis added one centimetre to his own pole‑vault world record on 12 March at the Mondo Classic in Uppsala.

Swiss athlete Simon Ehammer reclaimed the World Athletics Indoor Championships heptathlon title with 6,670 points, breaking the previous world record of 6,645 set by American Ashton Eaton on 10 March 2012 in Istanbul.

Bahamian Devynne Charlton defended her World Athletics Indoor Championships title in the women’s 60m hurdles in 7.65, equalling the world record she set in Glasgow on 3 March 2024.

American Khaleb McRae broke the men’s indoor 400 m world record at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville on 13 February, improving the 21‑year‑old mark by 0.05 seconds.

Americans Michael Norman and Canadian Christopher Morales Williams have recorded faster indoor 400 m times, but neither performance met the standards for ratification.

Also among the newly ratified records is the men’s indoor 4×800 m relay set by a U.S. quartet on 6 February at the Penn Classic in Philadelphia.

Clay Pender (1:49.69), Luke Houser (1:47.47), Luciano Fiore (1:47.35) and Sean Dolan (1:45.79) combined for 7:10.29, lowering the previous world record of 7:11.30 set in Boston on 25 February 2018 by 1.01 seconds.
