The 2026 World Athletics Road Running Championships were held in Copenhagen, Denmark. On the opening day, Saturday (the 19th), the men's and women's road mile and 5 km races took place. Both courses started on Østerbrogade and finished near Parken Stadium; the mile course was V-shaped, while the 5 km course used the mile layout with an additional loop.

Men and women started on separate guns, and across the four races athletes delivered exciting performances, with European runners' eye-catching results leaving a strong impression.

Jakob Ingebrigtsen, in the 5 km showdown, clocked 12:59 to set a new national record and take the silver medal.

French athleteAgathe Guillemotand German athleteRobert Farkeneach beat strong rivals from Africa and the United States, respectively, to claim the 1-mile titles.

Women's mile

In the women's mile the pack stayed compact through the first half, with 800 m split 2:18 and about 2:44 at the V-turn; no one had surged yet. France's Agathe Guillemot (阿加特·吉耶莫) followed patiently until the clock showed 3:57— with the finish in sight she suddenly moved into the lead and kicked hard, quickly opening a gap, ultimately Agathe Guillemot defeating strong rivals from Ethiopia and Kenya, winning in 4:22.74 and setting a European record.

Ethiopia's Freweyni Hailu finished second in 4:24.35, winning another women's one-mile silver medal following the 2023 Riga Road Running World Championships.Kenya's Mirriam Cherop finished third in 4:25.71.

02

Men's mile

American Yared Nuguse dominated the men's one-mile race from the start; at the sound of the gun he immediately surged to the front and opened a small gap on the chasing pack, with Germany's Robert Farken right on his heels.

With about 600 m to go the chase began and Yared Nuguse's advantage gradually disappeared;almost at the same spot where the women's winner made her decisive move, Robert Farken completed his pass on the long-time leader Yared Nuguse and ultimately won in 3:51.80, setting a German record and the world-leading time for the year. This result also places him in the road milerose to second on the world all-time listsecond only to Elliot Giles' world record of 3:51.3.

North American one-mile record holder Yared Nuguse took silver in his first appearance at the Road Running World Championships with 3:51.80.

Luxembourg's Ruben Querinjean set a national record of 3:52.77, producing one of the biggest upsets of this championship and taking the bronze medal. This bronze also carries special significance: it is the first athletics medal at a global event won by a Luxembourg senior man since Josy Barthel's gold in the 1500 m at the 1952 Olympics.

Notably, both the champion and the runner-up were wearing On 昂跑's newly released LightSpray Cloudboom Volt Pro. Visually the shoe features a pronounced on-foot curve at the forefoot and an extended heel flare; in an era dominated by thick soles, this shoe's "ultra-thin" midsole design caught people’s attention. We'll continue to monitor how it performs in practice.

03

Women's 5 km

After the start, Likina AMEBAW of Ethiopia — last year's Copenhagen half-marathon champion — moved into the lead shortly after the gun. Her main rival, Kenya's Caroline GITONGA, sat second, and Ugandan youngster Charity Cherop was third, with the three major African middle- and long-distance nations occupying the top three.

By halfway, Caroline GITONGA had overtaken Likina AMEBAW and was leading the main pack.AMEBAW stuck close and, about 11 minutes into the race, began to surge, steadily extending the gap and turning her advantage into victory, taking the win in a season-best 14:41.

Caroline GITONGA finished second in 14:48, while Australia's Rose DAVIES moved up later to claim bronze in 14:50, setting an Oceania record.

04

Men's 5 km

In the final event of the first day, the men's 5 km featured a spectacular showdown among top contenders. After the start, French favorite Jimmy GRESSIER's teammate Flavien SZOT worked in support, charging to the front from the outset to lead and occasionally checking his watch for pace.

At five minutes, Jimmy GRESSIER and his teammate completed the "handoff" and began to lead. Jakob INGEBRIGTSEN remained around twentieth place after the start.

Past the halfway point, Kenya's Charles KIBOINO and Eritrea's Saymon AMANUEL and Dawit SEARE were occupying the top three.

In the final two minutes the race shifted again. First Saymon AMANUEL and Dawit SEARE both moved past KIBOINO, then Jakob INGEBRIGTSEN quietly rose to third and, with a decisive effort, surged to the lead.

However, 19-year-old Dawit SEARE had the stronger sprint, producing a last-moment decisive move to win in 12:56, with Jakob INGEBRIGTSEN taking silver in 12:59. Both athletes set national records, and their thrilling duel provided a perfect finale to the opening day.

It is particularly regrettable that today isJakob INGEBRIGTSEN's birthday — he was unable to gift himself a title as a birthday present. He must feel disappointed; we look forward to his next outstanding performance.
