Aoyama Gakuin became the second school in Hakone Ekiden history to achieve three consecutive championships, and has won nine titles in the past twelve years. Kokugakuin University also earned its highest-ever finish, placing second. Juntendo University, which was sixth after the first leg, finished third; Waseda University was fourth. Chuo University placed fifth. Komazawa University took sixth, and their final-leg runner Keita Sato (senior) set a new leg record with a time of 1:07:31. Josai University placed seventh, Soka University eighth, Teikyo University ninth, and Nihon University tenth. Chuo Gakuin University placed eleventh. They lacked the finishing kick in the 10th leg and missed a seeded spot by 55 seconds.
