This Tuesday (16th), the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting — the Golden Spike — kicked off in Ostrava, Czech Republic.

Noah Lyles, the Olympic 100m champion and four-time World Championships 200m champion, ran 14.67 seconds in the men's 150m, substantially lowering the world best for the event.

Noah Lyles makes history in 150m debut

As a leading figure in men's sprinting, Noah Lyles was making his first attempt at the non-standard 150m distance, but the race seemed tailor-made for him. Combining his absolute explosiveness over 100m with his dominant finish over 200m, he displayed the full range of his sprinting power on the track.

Coming off the bend, Lyles was level with South African Sinesipho Dambile. But once they hit the straight,Lyles quickly established a lead and pulled away, finishing in 14.67 seconds.

That mark is a full 0.25 seconds faster than the world best of 14.92 set earlier this year by Olympic silver medalist Kishane Thompson. Dambile took second in 14.78, also better than the previous world best; Australian rising star Gout Gout produced a strong finish to take third in 14.96.

The victory extended Lyles' unbeaten run in the 2026 outdoor season. Earlier, he had already won the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting in Tokyo and the Wanda Diamond League in Rome.

Lyles said after the race, "Becoming the world's fastest doesn't feel unfamiliar. However, adapting to the 150m stepped start is really tough. We do practice it in training, but that's without starting blocks. Overall, I think this was a great performance."

This result will also be ratified as the world record at the end of the year.
