How fast can the 150m sprint be? See Lyles' new record

This Tuesday (the 16th), the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meet — the Golden Spike — kicked off in Ostrava, Czech Republic.

Olympic 100m champion and four-time World Championships 200m winner Noah Lyles ran 14.67 in the men's 150m, substantially improving the world-best for the event.

Lyles made history in his 150m debut.

As a leading figure in men's sprinting, although this was Lyles' first time tackling the non‑standard 150m distance, the race seemed tailor‑made for him. Combining the absolute explosiveness he shows over 100m with his late-race dominance over 200m, he displayed the full power of his sprinting range on the track.

Coming off the bend, Lyles ran level with South African Sinesipho Dambile. But once they hit the straight,Lyles quickly established a lead and pulled away, ultimately crossing the line in 14.67.。

The time was a full 0.25 seconds faster than the 14.92 world best set earlier this year by Olympic silver medallist Kishane Thompson. Dambile took silver in 14.78, also bettering the previous world best; Australian youngster Gout Gout powered home to take bronze in 14.96.

The victory extended Lyles' unbeaten run in the 2026 outdoor season. Earlier he had already won the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold stop in Tokyo and the Wanda Diamond League stop in Rome.

Lyles said after the race, "This feeling of being the world's fastest is not unfamiliar. But adapting to the staggered start for 150m is indeed very difficult. We practice it in training, but that's without starting blocks. All in all, I think that was a great performance."

The mark will also be ratified as a world record by the end of this year.
