In the early hours of July 5 Beijing time, at the Diamond League Eugene meet (Prefontaine Classic) women's hammer throw final, 19-year-old Chinese prospect Zhang Jiale won with a mark of 77.94 m, breaking the world U20 record for the third time. With her final throw she completed a come-from-behind victory, improving her personal best by 70 cm and edging out Canada's Olympic champion Camryn Rogers (77.81 m) and U.S. world champion DeAnna Price (76.95 m), claiming her first Diamond League gold.

Born in 2006, Zhang Jiale had already twice broken the women's hammer throw world U20 record last year, won bronze at the World Championships in Tokyo, and that same year was named World Athletics' Rising Star of the Year — the first athlete in Chinese athletics history to receive that honor.

Notably, Zhang Jiale's 77.94 m is only 28 cm short of teammate Zhao Jie's Asian record of 78.22 m, making it the second-best mark in Asian women's hammer throw history. Zhao, the Asian record-holder, finished fifth with 75.63 m; together the two form a strong one-two combination for Chinese women's hammer throw.
