Field size: 40,000 participants (record high)

In 2025 the full-marathon quota was 37,500; in 2026 it was 38,500. For the 20th anniversary in 2027, the full-marathon field increases to 40,000, a record high, making it Japan's largest marathon.

Cut-off time: 7 hours.

Course: Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building (start) → Suidobashi → Ueno-hirokoji → Kanda → Nihombashi → Asakusa Kaminarimon → Ryogoku → Monzen-Nakacho → Ginza → Tamachi/Takanawa → Hibiya → Gyoko-dori in front of Tokyo Station (finish).

Retains the classic course, running through Tokyo's most iconic landmarks — from modern cityscapes to traditional neighborhoods, the course itself is a visual feast.

However, the Tokyo Marathon has long been one of the hardest marathons in the world to get into; in recent years annual entries have topped 300,000. With the 20th anniversary this time, what will that number end up being?
