Which 10 countries had the fastest average men's marathon times in 2025?

When we talk about the global landscape of the marathon, we tend to focus first on the men's and women's winners of a particular race, a record-breaking moment, or the individual performances of top athletes. But at the national level, what truly determines a country's long-term competitiveness is not a handful of highlight moments, but the consistency and depth of its overall results.

Usingthe annual average of a country's top ten marathon results as the statistical metric can, to some extent, strip away randomness and more clearly present the true structure of each country's marathon level.

Through this ranking of average men's marathon performances, we can not only see the continued dominance of traditional powerhouses such as Kenya and Ethiopia in the men's marathon, but also observe the rapid ascents of certain countries over a short period, and the shifts exhibited by the Chinese team during an unusual competition cycle.

从总体排名来看,肯尼亚、埃塞俄比亚和日本依旧稳居前三位,与去年保持一致延续了近几年在男子马拉松项目上的稳定优势。

This year the most notable change was Uganda, which surged from last year's 12 th place to th, becoming the country with the largest rise among the top ten. By contrast, China, which ranked th last year, slipped to 13 th this year and failed to remain in the top ten. The United States and France, which were 10 th and 11 th last year, moved up to th and 10 th respectively.

Kenyan men's marathon average times remain at the top.Kenya's No. 1 ranking stems both from extremely high individual ceilings and from multiple athletes delivering top-level outputs across different races.萨维(Sabastian Kimaru Sawe)first ran at the London Marathon — only his second career marathon — and clocked 2:02:27 , claiming his first World Marathon Major victory. He then finished the Berlin Marathon in 2:02:16 , posting the world's fastest time of the year for two consecutive years.

Additionally, Korir(John Korir)won the Valencia Marathon in 2:02:24 to take the title, producing a negative split with the second half 69 seconds faster than the first. He also became one of only two athletes worldwide to run a marathon's second half in under 61 minutes; the other was the late Kiptum. 基普春巴(Geoffrey Toroitich KIPCHUMBA)ran 2:03:30 to break the Amsterdam Marathon course record.

Ethiopia's average results rank second. The country's best time of the year comes from 2002 born rising star (Tadese Takele),他在东京马拉松以 2:03:23 won the title and set a personal best. In the same race, veteran Deresa Geleta(Deresa Geleta)以 2:03:51 finished second, which is also Ethiopia's second-best national time of the year. The fact that young athletes can approach the country's top-level performance distribution reflects the nation's strong long-term competitiveness.

Japan, ranked third, shows its strength more in the consistency of results rather than in outright top-end speed. Suguru Osako ran 2:04:55, improving the Japanese national record by second, and it was also his first marathon of the year.

Ryota Kondo at the Osaka Marathon clocked 2:05:39 and missed victory by only seconds to finish second, and set the fastest debut marathon time by a Japanese athlete; Kyohei Hosoya ran 2:05:58. These kinds of results — close to but slightly below the world elite level — are widely distributed among many athletes, which has kept Japan ranked in the top three nations for three consecutive years.

Interestingly, Uganda moved directly from 12  last year to this year; the core reason is that its top athletes consistently produced high-level results throughout the year.'post-2000s'rising star Kiplimo(Jacob Kiplimo)made his London Marathon debut with 2:03:37,then at the Chicago Marathon he ran 2:02:23 to complete the second marathon of his career and win his first World Marathon Major title.

Ugandan star,5000 m,10000 m world record holder (Joshua Cheptegei) also ran 2:04:52  in Amsterdam, and in Tokyo he recorded 2:05:59.

Germany remained in fifth place, the same as last year. Germany’s top runner, Petros, ran 2:04:03 in Valencia to take second place and broke the national record. The United States, which moved up from 10th last year to 8th this year, is led on the domestic performance list by Connor Mantz, who ran 2:04:43 at the Chicago Marathon to break the 23‑year‑old U.S. marathon record.

Chinese male runners 2025 the average time of the top ten in  2:09:34, their ranking fell from 8th last year to 13th, placing them behind Spain and the United Kingdom. This shift is closely related to the scheduling in the National Games year. In this cycle, most registered athletes adjusted their race plans to focus on preparation.

However, on an individual level, several Chinese male runners still posted strong performances this year: He Jie ran2:07:20 at the Tokyo Marathon, his second-best personal time; Feng Peiyou set the Chinese-national athlete race record at the 2:08:06 at the Shanghai Marathon; Yang Shaohui ran 2:08:07  at the Xiamen Marathon, likewise breaking the Chinese-national athlete race record; after recovering from injury, Chen Tianyu again ran under hours 10 minutes at the Osaka Marathon (2:09:33).

Finally, it's worth noting that the Valencia Marathon truly lives up to its reputation as one of the world's fastest courses. Among the countries ranked in the top ten for men's marathon average results, countries' fastest annual times came from Valencia; Chicago, Tokyo and Daegu courses each contributed countries' fastest times.

Shall we predict how next year's men's rankings will look? We'll find out in a year.
