New York Road Runners (NYRR) today announced that Olympic and World Athletics Championships champions Eliud Kipchoge and Sifan Hassan will participate in the 2025 TCS New York City Marathon; the race date is November 2, the same day as the Beijing Marathon.
Eliud Kipchoge has won 11 Abbott World Marathon Majors races, taking titles in Berlin, Tokyo, London and Chicago. He is making his debut at the TCS New York City Marathon, the only World Marathon Majors race he has not yet entered.
Eliud Kipchoge is widely regarded as the greatest marathoner of all time; he won consecutive Olympic marathon gold medals at the 2016 Rio and 2020 Tokyo Games, becoming the third man to achieve that feat.
In Vienna in 2019, he ran 1:59:40 in the INEOS 1:59 challenge, breaking the two-hour marathon barrier and redefining the limits of human endurance. Upon completing the TCS New York City Marathon, Eliud Kipchoge will receive the Abbott World Marathon Majors Six Star Medal, awarded to athletes who complete the original six majors — Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York.
Eliud Kipchoge said: “Competing in the TCS New York City Marathon has always been a long-term goal of mine, and I am honored to race alongside the tens of thousands of runners who will traverse New York’s five boroughs in November. I look forward to the city’s energy, the passionate running community, and the challenge of this iconic course.”
Eliud Kipchoge will face defending champion Abdi Nageeye, former New York City Marathon champion Evans Chebet and Albert Korir,and 2024 Paris Olympics bronze medalist Benson Kipruto, Abel Kipschumba and 2024 London Marathon champion Alexander Mutiso's fierce competition.
Eliud Kipchoge most recently finished ninth at the Sydney Marathon in August, and among these opponents are several who have beaten him in recent years.
Sifan Hassan will make her debut at the TCS New York City Marathon after winning the Sydney Marathon; she broke the Sydney Marathon record, becoming the first woman on Australian soil to run under 2:20.
Sifan Hassan is a threat at any distance; at the 2024 Paris Olympics she showed impressive form, winning medals in the 5,000 meters, 10,000 meters and the marathon, becoming the first woman to win medals across all three events.
Across her gruelling Olympic schedule she ran more than 61 kilometers and set the Olympic marathon record. For her relentless efforts, she was named World Athletics Female Athlete of the Year for 2024.
Sifan Hassan made her marathon debut at the 2023 London Marathon; despite stopping several times during the race to stretch, she still won. She has won four of her six career marathons.
"The TCS New York City Marathon is legendary, and I'm thrilled to be part of the Abbott World Marathon Majors again," Sifan Hassan said. "I love a challenge, and I'm ready to compete with the best athletes in the world."
Sifan Hassan's personal best gives her a four-minute advantage over the other competitors in the women's elite field, but she'll face familiar faces and former TCS New York City Marathon champion Sheila Chepkirui, Hellen ObiriandSharon Lokedi compete. Hassan, Obiri and Lokedi last raced in the marathon at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where Hassan took gold, Obiri won bronze, and Lokedi finished fourth, just missing the podium.
