2026 Shanghai Marathon set for Dec 6 next year; 30th‑anniversary medal anticipated

The 2025 Shanghai Marathon successfully concluded today, with the suspense over the men’s and women’s champions settled, and the date for next year’s race revealed alongside the post-race announcements. At the Shanghai Marathon post-race press conference, the organizing committee officially announced that the 2026 Shanghai Marathon will be held on December 6, 2026, and that registration will open no later than the end of April 2026, which means Shanghai Marathon runners will have an extended preparation period once again.

After the cancellation of the health run this year, the short-distance race events will be reconfigured: the 5-kilometer event is expected to be run as an independent race unit and is scheduled for December 5, 2026. So will next year’s Shanghai Marathon participants have the chance to compete on back-to-back days?

Next year coincides with the 30th anniversary of the Shanghai Marathon and is also the Year of the Horse in the lunar calendar. The Shanghai Marathon will partner with the Xu Beihong Art Museum to create a more collectible 30th anniversary commemorative medal, and while we don't know whether this medal will become the most expensive Shanghai Marathon medal on the 'seafood market,' what we can already foresee is that competition for Shanghai Marathon entries next year will be even fiercer, and the lottery acceptance rate will inevitably fall further.

Are you ready to register for next year's Shanghai Marathon?
