The 2026 list of high-level domestic road race athletes has been announced—350 athletes in total, of which 44 are domestic elite athletes.
Compared with the previous edition, the number of male domestic elite athletes has been reduced from 36 to 23. New additions include Zhaxi Ciren (Xiao) and Yu Shuiqing, while Li Zicheng, Guan Yousheng, Renqing Dongzhibu and others are not on the list.
Across the full roster, athletes born in 2000 or later account for more than 60%, including several young runners born in 2005 and 2006.
In addition to "domestic elite athletes", there are also "qualified-level athletes." More than 180 men have reached the men's full marathon Sports Master standard (2:19:20), indicating that the overall level of men's marathoning in the country has entered the "2:19 era."
Meanwhile, 26 women have reached the women's international Master standard (2:33:20), including Zhang Shuihua.
As you know, athletes selected for the high-level list receive clear advantages when entering races—for example, an elite registration channel, placement in the elite start area, allowance for personal drinks, and pre-race technical briefings and other professional support. Some events also offer invitational entry slots and corresponding appearance arrangements, giving them a significantly better race experience and competitive support than ordinary participants.
From a career development standpoint, being listed means an athlete's performance is officially endorsed, making it easier to receive race invitations, commercial partnerships, and brand attention.
Of course, this status also comes with stricter anti-doping oversight. Selected athletes must complete anti-doping education clearance, undergo in-competition and out-of-competition testing, and strictly follow regulations on medications and nutritional supplements—the compliance requirements are far higher than for regular mass participants.
