Over the past weekend, Frozen Head State Park in Tennessee once again showed the world its brutal side. The 2026 Barkley Marathons ended with zero finishers. In this extreme contest between humans and nature, none of the 40 elite entrants were able to complete the famous five-lap challenge. In the end, only France’s Sébastien Raichon completed and qualified for the "Fun Run" (i.e., finishing 3 laps within 40 hours), becoming the only competitor to leave with an official result this year. This year’s race officially began at 6:00 AM on Saturday, February 14 (the conch horn was sounded at 5:00). It was the earliest start in Barkley Marathons history. Usually held in mid-to-late March, this year’s move to mid-February forced runners to face harsher conditions: lower temperatures, shorter daylight, and more biting rain and dense fog. Even the iconic start — that famous yellow gate — had to be relocated this year due to construction. Brutal attrition: from 40 to 1 Forty runners lined up this year, including ten women. The field was star-studded, featuring 2024 five-lap finisher John Kelly, Britain’s Damian Hall, French trail ace Mathieu Blanchard (UTMB runner-up, Hardrock 100 runner-up), and American all-rounder Max King. Lap 1: French pack in front Early on a group with a distinctly French accent asserted dominance. A lead group of nine passed the course’s landmark fire tower in just 2 hours 40 minutes. By the end of the first lap, the top five had clocked roughly 9 hours 47 minutes. Lap 2: rain and night thin the field By the start of lap 2 only 12 runners (30% of the field) remained, and the rain began to pour. Belgian Séverine Vandermeulen stood out as the only woman to reach the second lap; although she did not complete it, she covered the greatest distance of any female competitor in this edition. At the end of lap 2, Sébastien Raichon, Mathieu Blanchard and Damian Hall arrived almost together in about 22 hours 35 minutes. Max King was close behind. But as the race entered lap 3, the real test arrived. Decisive Lap 3: mountains shrouded in dense fog, field wiped out When the final four — Raichon, Hall, Blanchard and King — set out on lap 3, the course was enveloped in thick fog and visibility dropped to near zero. The lone survivor: Sébastien Raichon The spotlight ultimately fell on the Frenchman. He pushed through the fog to complete the third lap, finishing in 38:05:46. That time met the "Fun Run" standard (3 laps within 40 hours).
