As registrations continue to climb, one of the world's most influential road races — the London Marathon — stands at the threshold of a major structural transformation.
According to reports from The Guardian, Reuters and other authoritative media, the organizers are in talks with relevant city authorities to study whether to expand the event into a two-day weekend format starting in 2027. If this plan is implemented, the London Marathon's participation could rise from the current roughly 50,000 participants on a single day toabout 100,000 over the two-day weekend, becoming one of the largest marathon events in the world.
The key factor driving this transformation has been the explosive surge in participant demand in recent years.
Public data shows that the number of lottery applicants for the 2026 London Marathon has exceeded 1.13 million, a historic high, while the actual lottery acceptance rate is only in the single digits. This means that the vast majority of runners, even after entering for years, are unlikely to secure a race spot.
At the same time, the event's capacity has neared its limit. Finishers in the 2025 race exceeded 56,000, a world record. But given multiple practical constraints such as traffic control, medical services, and aid systems, there is very limited room to further expand single-day capacity.
Against this backdrop, a "two-day format" has become a potential solution that balances scale and safety.
The London Marathon has long been regarded as one of the world's largest single-day charity fundraising sporting events.
Data show that the 2025 events raised approximately £87.3 million in donations. If expanded to a two-day format, organizers expect that figure could rise to over £130 million.
This means that expansion is not only about participation opportunities, but also directly relates to the broader delivery of social value. This is also a key reason why event organizers continue to explore new models.
