On April 29, 2026, the 2026 Shanghai Marathon opened pre-registration. In addition to the busy registration period, the Shanghai Marathon’s sponsorship recruitment also began in April.
According to Shanghai Observer, as the country's first platinum-label marathon event, it is highly likely to become the country's first Grand Slam marathon event — the Shanghai Marathon, in the new five-year sponsorship cycle from 2027–2031, commercialization upgrades and sponsor changes have become the focus of industry attention
If the Shanghai Marathon enters its Grand Slam inaugural year in 2027, will sponsorship change? Sponsors whose contracts are about to expire are likely to be significantly affected.
The sponsorship structure for the 2026 Shanghai Marathon is divided into four tiers, and the tradition of a new five-year cycle is expected to continue.China UnionPay and SPD Bank, as Shanghai Marathon honorary sponsors, have completed a new round of renewals. Another official sponsor, 汇添富基金, has a contract that runs until 2030, and contracts with other race support partners 佳农, 怡宝, and 魔力 will also extend beyond 2027.

That said, the most important issue this year still appears to be finalizing the Shanghai Marathon's supreme sponsor. Beyond commercial development, elite athletes' partnership resources are also considered an important reference point. Will Nike have enough advantage on that front?
First and foremost is the title sponsor Nike. Having sponsored the Shanghai Marathon since 2012, Nike's ties with the race are already very deep, but with a new round of sponsorship solicitation underway, many well-known domestic and international brands have also shown great enthusiasm for the Shanghai Marathon, and competition is inevitable. May 31 will be the deadline for the title sponsor to submit collaboration proposals.
It is almost certain that this year's sole athletic-apparel sponsorship could set a new record for sponsorship fees in the history of domestic marathons — after all, no one wants to miss out on the country's first Grand Slam IP.
In February this year, Shanghai Donghao Lansheng Sports Co., Ltd. established a co-branded merchandise project and an International Tourism Runners Project (ITP), showing a very firm determination to develop co-branded race merchandise and peripherals. In this Shanghai Marathon sponsorship solicitation, the development of co-branded merchandise has been listed as a mandatory negotiation item for the athletic-apparel sponsorship slot, and the final contract must clearly specify the product categories to be developed, approximate quantities, revenue-sharing model, and other details.

On the other hand, the Shanghai Rowing Open and Shanghai Sailing Open — which are also operated by Shanghai Donghao Lansheng Sports Co., Ltd. — are appearing together in this sponsorship solicitation; being able to package sponsorship for them could also be a plus.
At the same time, starting in 2026, the Shanghai Marathon Health Run will be organized independently, held the day before the full marathon, with registration scheduled separately. This means the health run held a day earlier will no longer be an appendage of the full marathon, but will truly have the chance to become an independent IP and even possess its own commercial value, with more sponsor brands likely to participate in commercial development in the future.
Who do you think will be the sports apparel sponsor for the 2027 Shanghai Marathon?
