Best races for women targeting a 2:20 marathon in the second half of the year

For a female marathoner who has already reached2 hours20 minuteslevel, she has already stepped into the ranks of the world's super-elite.She is at the extreme edge of human athletic performance, and the marginal gains from training to break her personal PB again are very small.

At this point, race selection(includingcourse metrics, weather conditions, and the depth of the competition) as well asthe athlete's race readiness, will all become the keys to whether she can successfully break her PB.

At the demanding pace of 3:19 per kilometer (2:20:00 finish pace), the athlete's sensitivity to environmental factors increases geometrically. When choosing a race in the second half of 2026, which aspects should be considered?

Choose a relatively flat course (total elevation gain kept within 80 m, preferably no sustained climbs over 1.5%), and minimize the number of turns and out-and-backs, so thatthere is less additional energy expenditure for the athlete.。

On race day, the starting temperature should be controlled between6°C and11°C , with relative humidity ideally below 60%, and preferably with no strong winds.

In the 2:20 range, female runners are prone to fall into“the predicament of going it alone.”If the race provides pacers at paces of 3min16 sec to3 min18 sec per kmpacers — when they break the wind, women drafting behind them cut their energy expenditure and only by pushing in the later stages can they havea slim hope.

Having strong competitors in the race is equally crucial; the competitive atmosphere generated by rivals duelling in the later stages often pushes them to their limits.

Because temperatures are high from June to August and high-intensity training loads are heavy, race dates shouldn't be too early; priority should be given to10 events from mid-month to12 early-monthraces, so thatduring the golden autumn (9-10 month) one can complete high-quality, event-specific high-intensity sessions.

In the second half of 2026 there are six of the world's most closely watched road races,Chicago, Valencia, Amsterdam, Berlin, Sydney and New York— with so many races, which marathon is the best choice for a PB?

On October 11Chicago Marathonas one of the World Marathon Majors,it is the undisputed first choice,2019 yearKosgei (2:14:04)and2024 yearChepngetich (2:09:56)both etched their names into legend here, breaking the women's marathon world record.

The Chicago courseis almost entirely flat, with 74 m of elevation gain, wide streets, and large-radius turns, which helps maintain a steady cruising pace. In mid-October, Chicagotemperatures often range from 6°C–12°C, the ideal temperature range for human heat dissipation.

Because a large number of women target the 2:20 barrier in Chicago each year, the organizers typically set multiple groups of precise male pacemakers and there are many male club elites at that level who form a natural drafting pack — a prime PB opportunity for the women.

The Valencia Marathon in December is the world's undisputed "record factory"。In 2025 Joyciline Jepkosgei and Peres Jepchirchir clocked 2:14:00 and 2:14:43 respectively to take first and second, and both also recorded personal bests (PBs).

The course has only 15 m of elevation gain, making it one of the flattest in the world, with average temperatures around 10°C–13°C, with almost no strong wind, andThe preparation cycle is sufficiently long.

Valencia is also one of the world's“sub-2:30”and“sub-2:20”races with the highest runner density; the organizers have an almost fanatical pursuit of record-setting and will assign male pacemakers for key splits like "2:15, 2:18, 2:20" — athletes here will never run alone.

Female 2:20 runners aiming to target a PB in the second half of 2026 should make October's Chicago their first choice; if preparation time is insufficient, December's Valencia is also a good option. John Korir once regrettably withdrew from Chicago in 2025, and at the end of the year staged a comeback in Valencia,2:02:24, improving his personal best by about 20 seconds.

Amsterdam Marathon(October 18), the climate is pleasant and the depth of the elite women's field fits well, but if you choose this race you must contact the organizers separately beforehand to ensure a dedicated pacemaker is provided.

Berlin MarathonAlthough the elite women's depth is extremely strong, late-September weather can be on the warm side — last year's temperatures in Berlin were a nightmare for most participants, so it's stillbetter suited as a backup option.。

Sydney MarathonAt the end of August, temperatures are 10–19°C, which is relatively high; more critically, the course has significant undulations and the wind on the bridges is obvious, and there is no 2:20pacemaker;New York MarathonAlthough held on November 1 and the climate is suitable, the race has no official pacemakers — it's a pure competitive head-to-head event and not appropriate for athletes aiming to chase a PB. These two major marathons are not recommended.

When athletes run for long periods on an extremely flat course, the force angles on muscle groups are almost completely uniform, and without gradient changes to alternately relieve muscle fatigue, this easily leads tothe quadriceps and iliotibial band 30 experiencing localized fatigue after a number of kilometers.

When training, simulating on relatively flat surfaces produces better results for developing the muscles' fatigue resistance under a single loading pattern.

Female athletes running into 2:20 face the greatest challenge in energy depletion; during high-speed running, blood flow to the gastrointestinal tract can drop by more than 80%, making carbohydrate absorption a huge challenge.

The gut's ability to absorb carbohydrates is not innateTo break through limits, you need a scientific nutrition and fueling strategy,Ensure that at a 3:19 per kilometer pace you can consistently absorb 80–90 g of carbohydrates per hour without cramping.

I hope female marathoners targeting 2:20 in the second half of this year find the right timing, conditions, and support to successfully surpass themselves. I also wish every runner in the second half of the year to run with confidence and flair!
