The one-mile race at the London Diamond League on July 18 was also British middle-distance runner Josh Kerr’s challenge to the one-mile world record that had lain dormant for 27 years.

Kerr ultimately finished in 3:42.66, breaking the world record previously held by Queroi, and bringing the “222” project to a successful close.

Behind this, what equipment did Brooks and Kerr himself carefully prepare to help him complete the challenge? Next, we’ll reveal it from head to toe.

Track fans familiar with Kerr know he always likes to race wearing a pair of coated Oakley sunglasses. His blond hair and the colorful mirrored lenses have become an ICON on the middle-distance scene.

For this race he wore an Oakley RSLV Lite fitted with swapped mirrored lenses.

Inspired by that ICON, Brooks drew the color cues and designed a deep-blue The Speed Suit race skinsuit that combines aerodynamics with a silhouette tailored exactly to his physique.

The brand logo on the suit also took inspiration from polarized lenses, rendered in iridescent and lake-blue tones to echo both Kerr’s glasses and the white-and-blue spikes on his feet.

The upper body features a dense array of laser-perforated holes to maximize cooling and ventilation. A dual-fabric composite structure from the flanks to the back enhances breathability and visually introduces “gold” elements—symbolizing that Kerr’s aim goes beyond breaking records; the pursuit of victory is equally unquestionable.

The gear on Kerr’s right forearm and wrist came from amazfit Huami Technology. Huami’s Cheetah 2 Pro served as the data witness for his attempt, and for this challenge it was decorated with diamonds on the bezel; the numerous polygonal perforations on the strap were also an effort to minimize weight.

Interestingly, the amazfit heart-rate armband on Kerr’s right forearm bore an orange “222,” signifying that this kit was built specifically for the attempt.

This setup inevitably brings COROS to mind—the “dual-track strategy” of heart-rate armband + watch appears to be increasingly endorsed by brands and athletes alike!

For this high-profile challenge, Brooks developed another piece of equipment tailored specifically for Kerr.

The Hyperion 222 spikes.
Besides the name matching the “222” challenge plan (222 seconds), even the traction dots on the plate—added to increase grip—were thoughtfully designed to number 222.

Based on Kerr’s running habits, Brooks also made some bold innovations.
A visibly pronounced fore-and-rear curvature is uncommon in spike shoes; an ATPU-based midsole also appears to be a first within Brooks’ racing-shoe lineup; the carbon plate and titanium spikes ensure the shoe’s rigidity and lightness.

If Kerr’s “222” gear were released to the market, would you buy it for its “record-breaking” provenance or for its cutting-edge product technology?
