In the world of athletics, the mile is a very special event.
Although it's not an official championship distance at the Olympics or World Championships, it nonetheless carries a kind of classical athletics romance. It requires athletes to possess absolute speed close to 800 m of absolute speed, while also demanding aerobic base and speed endurance. In a sense, the mile is the most direct—and most brutal—litmus test of middle-distance running.
And the men's mile world record has lain dormant for a full27years.
1999 In [year], Moroccan legend Hicham El Guerrouj ran in Rome 3 minutes 43 seconds 13Since then, the world middle-distance scene—from the African dynasty, to the arrival of Ingebrigtsen, and on to the rise of a new generation like Nuguse, Kerr, Kessler—has repeatedly attacked El Guerrouj's record, yet it has remained utterly unshaken.
2026 [year] 7 [month]18 [day], at the London Diamond League, British standout Josh·Kerr will line up to openly challenge this long-sealed record.

The long wait
27 years of record drought
For athletics, the men's mile world record remaining stagnant for such a long time is undoubtedly a historical anomaly. The first mile world record recognized by World Athletics was set by John·Paul·Jones in 1913 year, with a time of 4 minutes14 seconds40. After that86 years, until the Moroccanmiddle-distancelegendary runnerHicham El Guerroujin1999 the year, in Rome, set3 minutes43 seconds13 as the current world record; this record has been broken31 times,In other words, on average in less than3 years, humanity would see a new breakthrough.

In 1999, Hicham El Guerrouj set the 1‑mile world record in Rome at 3 minutes 43.13 seconds, a mark that has stood to this day. ([worldathletics.org](https://worldathletics.org/news/news/el-guerrouj-smashes-mile-record-as-johnson-da?utm_source=openai))
By comparison,1999 the years to date27 have felt especially long.
During this period,1500 meters are still thrilling. Olympic and World Championship finals keep producing classic duels; worldwide there are athletes who have run under3 minutes30 seconds are becoming increasingly common,2025 and in some years there have even been14 athletes who, in the1500 meters ran under3 minutes30 seconds. But the one-mile record has remained fixed at3 minutes43 seconds13, becoming an immovable monument in the history of middle-distance running — approached countless times, yet never surpassed.

Why is it so "unassailable"?
Why has Kui Luoyi's record been so hard to break? Cole's coach Danny·Mackey, when discussing the question, gave a very direct answer: because it's really hard.
That's right — it's as simple and blunt as that.3 minutes43 seconds13 means you must hold every400 meters55 seconds45 his pacemaking lasted for as many as four laps. In the past27 years, the number of athletes who actually ran under3 minutes45 Athletes measured in seconds are few enough to count on one hand. Besides Kui Luoyi, there's only Jacob.·Ingebrigtsen and Yared·Nuguse at the2023 Prefontaine Classic in3 minutes43 seconds73and3 minutes43 seconds respectively.97That race was already great, but it still fell a bit short of the world record.

There is another practical reason the one-mile record is hard to break: there simply aren’t many high-level one-mile races. The core events in modern athletics are the1500 metres, and opportunities to run the mile on the professional calendar are limited. For a long time the most important outdoor mile races were scheduled earlier in the season, when athletes might not yet be at their best. For middle-distance runners, breaking the record requires not only ability but also the right timing, venue, pacemakers, opponents, and form all aligning.
That’s also why an event that seems to be short by less than1 seconds has been sealed in history for so long.

“PROJECT 222”
Being high-profile is typical of Cole. Even before the outdoor season began, he publicly announced he would challenge the one-mile world record. The plan was named“PROJECT 222”, with a clear purpose: he wanted to run the mile in222 seconds, that is,3 minutes42 seconds range. For this race,Coleand sponsorsBROOKS released new spikes, custom kit, and even produced video content centered on his training.

On the surface, it's the same commercial packaging asNike Breaking 4 identical commercial packaging, butColeis best at dialing into peak form for major championships, and that's also the confidence behind the "PROJECT 222".。
From2021 year to2024 year, he produced high-level performances at four consecutive global championships, winning an Olympic medal and a World Championships gold, and at the Paris Olympics1500 m final he ran3 minutes27 seconds79 as his personal best. This1500 m time is roughly equivalent to a mile in3 minutes44 seconds or so. In other words,ColeThe world record isn't out of reach, but he still needs to take a very difficult step forward.

And coach McGee believes,Coleis in a more mature place than before. He has the pre-championship speed he used to, his body is stronger, and his tempo-running is better than in the past. Unlike preparing for the World Championships or the Olympics, this timeColedoesn't need to prepare complex, changeable championship tactics. He doesn't have to deal with slow tactical finals, sudden surges, being boxed in, or chaotic final sprints. He only needs to prepare for one way of racing: running a mile steadily and evenly, as close to world-record pace as possible.

Let's see who has the last laugh
The mile world record isn't something you can achieve just by wanting it.Especially in the first 1000 meters, the pacemakers' role is critical.3 If the target is 43 minutes 13 seconds 800 or under,1 the first meters need to be controlled precisely at 50 minutes 90 seconds or so. If it's too slow, it's hard to make up later; if it's too fast, the final lap can completely fall apart.
OriginallyColeThe team had hoped to recruit world‑class mile runners to act as pacemakers, but that plan fell through. In the end,Kerrwill be paced byBROOKS BEASTS a teammateKidder and SlovenianRudolf. Rudolf is experienced, having served as a pacemaker in many fast1500 metre races as a pacemaker. Ideally, Kidder would carry the race to around950 metres, Rudolf would take over for a short stretch, and thenKerrwould have to face the final challenge alone.

The forecast for race day is currently sunny, with temperatures around24°C, and light winds. But for an attempt at the world mile record, even a gust of headwind, a disrupted rhythm, or a small slowdown can let the record slip away.
The London Mile is notKerr'sa one-man show. On the start line there are also Yared·Nuguse, Hobbs·Kessler, Nathan·Green, Simeon·Birnbaum and other strong contenders.
The most important of them is, without question, Nuguse.
Nuguse once in 2023 the year ran 3 minutes 43 seconds 97, and was one of the few in history to come closest to El Guerrouj’s world record. Moreoverhis coach has made it clear that Nuguse will do whatever it takes to stick to the pace, that he is not afraid of Cole, and even less afraid of failure.
That is both a threat and a help for Cole.

Many of the greatest middle-distance records in history were not born in solitude.1985 In year, Steve·Cram in Nice ran the 1500m in 3 minutes 30 seconds, with Aouita close on his heels;1999 in year, El Guerrouj’s mile world record was also set with Ngeny (former 1000 meter world record holder — his mark was recently broken on July 10 by Emmanuel Wanyonyi, having stood for 27 years) pressing almost shoulder-to-shoulder,notably, in that race both El Guerrouj and Ngeny broke the mile world record that stood at the time.2023 In year Ingebrigtsen and Nuguse at Prefontaine ran 3 minutes 43 seconds-level performances as well.
Maki also understands this, so if someone can hang on in the final kickCole, that could instead become the final surge needed to break the record.
05
Not just a record
ColeWhether Cole can break the world record, no one can give a definite answer yet.
In terms of ability,1500 meters3 minutes27 seconds79 the absolute capability at those meters/minutes/seconds levels is already very close; combined with consistent big-meet performances, scientific event-specific pace training, and modern technological support such as pacing systems and equipment, he has better external conditions than his predecessors.
But looking at the record itself,3 minutes43 seconds13 still resembles an unbridgeable chasm. It requires the athlete not only to be supremely capable but also, under perfect timing, conditions and fortune, to unleash every ounce of physical ability in under four minutes.
This is the gap between a great performance and a world record.

Over the past27 years, the men's mile has been waiting for a new name. Now,Colewith“PROJECT 222” arrived in London and stood on the same start line as a field of rivals.
If all goes well, Saturday afternoon in London could witness a long-awaited rewriting of middle-distance running history. Let’s wait and see.
