On March 1, 2026, at the USA Half Marathon Championships an incredible major error occurred — the three women who were leading the race (Jess McClain, Emma Grace Hurley and Ednah Kurgat) ran the wrong course because of an oversight by the race organizers. What had been a promising situation reversed: the three not only lost any chance of the national title, finishing only 9th, 12th and 13th respectively, but also dropped outside the automatic qualifying positions for the World Championships. After the race the affected athletes filed protests and appeals, but under USATF's current competition rules, although the arbitration panel found that the course misdirection affected the frontrunners, there is no provision in the rulebook to change final finishing positions — the official results therefore stood and the three were sadly not selected. Today, World Athletics announced a decision on a "strictly one-off basis": it will allow the U.S. team to send a seven-woman squad to the World Half Marathon Championships in Copenhagen (the usual entry limit is four athletes). According to World Athletics' statement, USATF designated four athletes as the official scoring entrants; the remaining three were designated as "additional entries." These additional athletes will not be eligible for individual medals or prize money, and their results will not count toward the team total. Although the three additional athletes will wear U.S. national team kit, their uniforms will be distinct from those of the official scoring athletes. However, they will be able to earn World Athletics ranking points (World Ranking Points) based on their final finishing positions.
