The 2026 Seoul Marathon produced a "world record." Korean runner Shin Heingchul (신행철) crossed the line in 2:54:10 (average pace 4:08 per km), becoming the fastest male in the world in the 70–74 age group. He improved the previous record by 9 seconds. The prior mark was 2:54:19, set by the Netherlands’ Joseph Schoonbroodt in 2022. Look at his splits: first half 1:27:12, second half 1:26:58 — a negative split — and his final two kilometers were at 4:00 per km, the fastest on the course. Shin is very active on social media and frequently shares his training. A few days before the race he posted the world best for the 70–74 age group, making it clear his goal in Seoul was to break the record. This wasn't his first time breaking three hours at age 70: at last November’s JTBC Seoul Marathon he ran 2:57:03. Before breaking the world record at this year’s Seoul Marathon, he ran the Tokyo Marathon two weeks earlier, finishing in 3:08:31. At last year’s Boston Marathon he finished in 3:19:10, winning the 70–74 age group by seven minutes.
