News: She became an IRONMAN legend at 80 — she only learned to swim at 59?

At the 2025 IRONMAN KONA World Championship on October 12, 2025,from New Jersey, USA Natalie Grabow at the age of 80 completed the 3.8 km swim, 180 km bike and 42 km run in 16 hours 45 minutes 26 seconds, becoming the champion of the 80–84 age group, and the oldest woman ever to finish the IRONMAN KONA World Championship.

Natalie’s athletic journey was not all smooth sailing. She didn’t learn to swim until she was 59 — just one year before her first triathlon. After learning to swim she bought a triathlon road bike and trained repeatedly in her basement gym. She started with Sprint Triathlon, moved up to half Ironman, and then to the full 226-km Ironman. At 61 she qualified for the IRONMAN KONA World Championship for the first time — it was also her first time swimming in the ocean and her first time running a full marathon.

To prepare for the 2025 season, Natalie trains two hours every day, alternating strength work, cycling and running. "It's exhausting but exhilarating. Every time I cross the finish line, I feel a little stronger."When she fell at the finish line, cameras everywhere captured it — she got up smiling and took that last step again.

After the race, former record-holder and 78-year-old Ironman finisher Cherie Gruenfeld personally came to congratulate her. At the awards ceremony the next day, Natalie received the champion's bowl as a symbol of honor.

Natalie's athletic career has spanned decades. She was born in the 1940s, before the United States had passed Title IX, when women had almost no opportunities to compete in school sports. After college she became a software engineer. In her 40s she began racing 5K and 10K road races; after turning 60 she officially began competing in triathlons. Today, Natalie still wakes early every day to train and plans her next race. IRONMAN KONA After the race she said firmly, “As long as I can move, I'll keep doing triathlons. Even if in the future I can't complete the full course, I'll do shorter-distance races, year after year.”

From a middle-aged person who couldn't swim to an 80-year-old triathlete who set a world record, Natalie Grabow embodies persistence and passion. "Sport is not a privilege of the young; it is a way to keep life vibrant." When she lifted the trophy, runners and triathlon fans around the world saw the same truth — age won't limit dreams; only passion keeps you forever young!
