In our last issue we rounded up the most popular athletics tracks inside Shanghai’s Inner Ring — still not enough? Don’t worry. This time we’ll dig into the popular running tracks hidden inside the Middle Ring of Shanghai.
1. Jing'an Sports Center
Address:
116 Wenshui Road, Jing'an District
Metro:
Line 1 Wenshui Road Station
Tracks:
Rooftop track — six standard 400 m blue synthetic lanes
Opening hours:
Weekdays 06:00–10:00; weekends 06:00–08:00
Highlights:
Run on a rooftop track 13 meters above ground for a floating, skywalk-like feeling;
The rooftop track’s free-access hours are limited each day; it may close during heavy rain, extreme heat, or events — don’t set out expecting it to be open;
Jing'an Sports Center is Shanghai’s first rooftop standard football pitch. The track and field are both relatively new and the venue has an underground carpark for convenient parking.
2. Jiangwan Stadium
Address:
346 Guohe Road, Yangpu District
Metro:
Line 10 Jiangwan Stadium Station
Tracks:
Three 750 m synthetic loops
Opening hours:
Daily 10:00–22:00
Not open Wednesdays 19:00–21:30
Check on-site notices for exact times
Highlights:
Each lap is 750 m — one lap is satisfyingly long, making it a good choice for long-distance enthusiasts;
The lanes are relatively narrow and people often cut across or occupy them, so be cautious while running;
The venue has lockers (2 RMB/hour), which are inexpensive and convenient for securing belongings;
Built in 1935, it has 91 years of history and was once called “the Far East’s premier stadium.” As a nearly century-old historic venue, the track remains open to the public — very community-friendly.
3. Yangpu Sports Activity Center
Address:
640 Longchang Road, Yangpu District
Metro:
Line 12 Longchang Road Station
Tracks:
Eight standard 400 m synthetic lanes
Opening hours:
Daily 06:00–08:00 — free
Highlights:
When the track is closed, you can use the outer fitness trail (570 m asphalt). There’s a QR code at the start to check in — after your run, your activity data can earn you “calorie coins” to redeem prizes;
Formerly Hudong Stadium (completed 1953), it has 73 years of history and holds many of Yangpu’s sporting memories.
4. Putuo Sports Center
Address:
218 Xixiang Road, Putuo District
Metro:
Line 7 Xincun Road Station
Tracks:
Blue eight-lane 400 m synthetic track
Opening hours:
Daily 05:30–09:00 and 17:30–20:30
Highlights:
The synthetic track was refurbished last year in a Klein blue color — it’s quite eye-catching;
The inner two lanes are designated for running and the outer two for walking; there are many walkers, so take care when doing intervals;
The football pitch is surrounded by wire fencing, so you don’t need to worry about stray balls;
The facility closes at 20:30, so for working runners who train after dinner the available time can feel tight;
Guess which area’s popular tracks we’ll introduce in the next issue?
