World record holder Faith Kipyegon produced a major upset at the Prefontaine Classic. In thewomen's one mile event 's final straightFaith Kipyegon was overtaken by American Nikki Hiltz, andcrossed the line first in 4:17.49, recording the world-leading time this season to take the win.

This was Faith Kipyegon's first defeat in the 1500m or the mile in more than five years, and her first loss in the Diamond League in four years.

Faith Kipyegon suffered her first loss in over five years in the women's mile at the Prefontaine Classic. The world record holder was unexpectedly overtaken down the final straight by American Nikki Hiltz and finished third in 4:17.80, whileNikki Hiltzcrossed the line first in 4:17.49, setting aworld-leading time this season. Kenyan Docus Ewoi took silver in a personal best of 4:17.62.

From the start Kipyegon adopted a conservative sit-and-kick tactic and failed to build an overwhelming lead in the early stages. Although Kipyegon was still leading into the final lap, Hiltz seized the opportunity in the last 200m to surge past and, with a strong 4:17.49,broke Mary Slaney's meeting record of 4:21.25 set in 1988.

This is Faith Kipyegon's first loss over 1500m or the mile since her defeat at the Diamond League in Florence in June 2021, and her first Diamond League loss in four years. Over the past five years she had been unbeaten at the distance in 14 races, including Olympic gold in Tokyo and two World Championship titles.

Nikki Hiltz is a 31-year-old American middle-distance runner who finished seventh in the 1500m final at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where Kipyegon won gold. She took silver in the same event at the 2025 World Indoor Championships and has shown steady improvement with consecutive bronze medals at recent World Indoor Championships.

Additionally, it's worth noting that Kipyegon has recently been shifting some attention to road racing: in February this year she made her road debut by winning the Monaco 10km in 29:46, a time that ranks joint 14th on the women's all-time road 10km list. It's her only recorded road long-distance race so far, and she has publicly stated an interest in the half marathon. Whether Kipyegon will eventually take on the marathon remains an exciting prospect.
