On the morning of June 11, 2026, the Abbott World Marathon Majors officially announced that South Africa’s Cape Town Marathon has been accepted as a World Marathon Majors event. That means the 2027 Cape Town Marathon will be the first-ever Majors race held in Africa and the eighth overall, following the Sydney Marathon. The 2027 Cape Town Marathon is scheduled to start on May 23, 2027. One remaining major question for the World Marathon Majors this year is the Shanghai Marathon on December 6. If all goes well and Shanghai, as a candidate event, passes the second-round comprehensive evaluation, the nine-Majors lineup will be established.
