On the final day of athletics at the 15th National Games, the men's 10,000m medals were decided first thing in the morning, and there was even the dramatic moment of a champion being stripped of the title.
Over the 25-lap track race, Ma Rui (Sichuan) led the early stages, while Wang Wenjie withdrew from contention for the title early. Yu Shuiqing (Liaoning), Luo Tianfan (Yunnan), and Renqing Dongzhibu (Qinghai) alternated at the front. With six laps to go, the lead group was down to just Yu Shuiqing, Jiang Fakun and Ma Wenliang (Qinghai). In the final two laps Yu and Jiang traded surges; in the last lap Jiang Fakun launched a powerful sprint and was the first to cross the finish line.
However, the result was soon reversed. In the final lap, Yang Shaohui, who was about to be lapped, illegally paced for his teammate Jiang Fakun; Jiang Fakun lost the gold, and both Yunnan athletes had their results disqualified.
Shandong's Tang Haoran 28:54.24 was upgraded to gold; Yu Shuiqing 28:55.28 took silver, and the original fourth-place Ma Wenliang ran 29:02.45 to secure a valuable bronze for the Qinghai team.
