The Cape Town Marathon, originally scheduled to start on 19 October 2025, was abruptly cancelled just before the race. According to officials, the cancellation was due to safety reasons: strong winds began overnight, blowing over facilities in the start/finish area, andbridges on the Cape Town Marathon course were affected by the strong winds, creating a safety hazard for participants. The Cape Town Marathon is Africa's first candidate event for the World Marathon Majors, and this year was the final year of the candidate evaluation. It's unclear whether the sudden cancellation will affect its bid to becomea World Marathon Majors event.
