Is Mizuno’s New Racing Shoe Going Spray‑Knit Too?

Since the "heel-less" Rebellion series, Mizuno has seemed quite willing to try all kinds of off-the-wall designs. Mizuno recently submitted a new running shoe to World Athletics, coded DEV-HWS. HW corresponds to the HYPERWARP series — does the S stand for Spray (just kidding)? The most eye-catching feature of this shoe is its sprayed-knit upper; it's unclear what performance differences it will have compared with the Light Spray upper technology. From the certification photos, the midsole—especially the heel—has a sponge-like texture similar to the current EVO 3 foam, and the density looks extremely low. The foam thickness at both the forefoot and heel is also considerable. But that kind of foam is probably designed for a few high-level races rather than for durability. With last year's pre-Shanghai Marathon launch of the new racing flagships HYPERWARP PURE/ELITE, Mizuno stopped trying to exploit World Athletics' midsole-measurement loopholes. By leveraging the ultra-lightweight feel and responsiveness of the MizunoEnerzy xp midsole, they returned the shoe midsole to a "one-piece" construction that a wide range of runners can handle more easily. For the carbon-topped HYPERWARP PURE, a size 41.5 weighs around 137g — in the "first tier" of lightness. This DEV-HWS could very well hit the 100g mark in the same size thanks to its ultra-light midsole plus an already very light sprayed-knit upper, potentially putting it on par with the EVO 3. Photos from other angles haven't been revealed on social media yet, so the shoe's performance characteristics remain a mystery. But given the very lively racing feel of the HYPERWARP PURE/ELITE, this potentially lighter, bouncier "HWS" is definitely worth looking forward to — it might even send Mizuno back onto the running world's trending topics. #Mizuno #Mizuno #RacingShoes #Marathon #TrailRunningBoom
