At the start of the race Kipyegon adopted a conservative sit-and-kick tactic and failed to build an overwhelming lead in the first half; although Kipyegon still led into the final lap, Hiltz seized the opportunity with 200 meters to go and surged past, powering home in 4:17.49. Also noteworthy is that Kipyegon has recently been shifting her focus toward road racing: in February this year she won the Monaco 10 km in 29:46 on her road debut, a time that sits tied for 14th on the women's all-time road 10 km list. It remains her only recorded road long-distance race so far, and she has openly expressed interest in the half marathon — leaving the prospect of a future marathon challenge an intriguing possibility.
