Starting tomorrow, the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship (World Athletics Ultimate Championship), abbreviated the Ultimate Championship, will take place in Budapest, Hungary.
This year our country has only two athletes — Yan Ziyi and Zhang Mingkun — representing the nation; both will take the field in the early hours of September 13.
As the "highest stage in athletics" in a non-Olympic, non-World Championships year, qualification for the event can only come via the following routes:
· Paris Olympic champions;
· Tokyo World Championships champions;
· This year's Diamond League overall champions;
· Top positions in the world rankings and a small number of invited athletes.
Young women's javelin thrower Yan Ziyi currently ranks No.1 in the world; this month she also won the women's javelin at the 2026 Diamond League Final, thereby securing qualification. Her competition will start at 00:13 Beijing time.
Zhang Mingkun will contest the men's long jump at 01:44 Beijing time. With the automatic "straight-through" slots for Olympic champions, World Championships champions and Diamond League overall champions removed, he entered as an alternate based on world ranking.
As the women's javelin Asian record holder, Diamond League record holder and world U20 record holder, Yan Ziyi has been consistent and repeatedly taken gold. Her PB (71.74m) is only 0.54m short of the world record — will she break through again and set a new mark at the Ultimate Championship?
This year Zhang Mingkun refreshed his PB with 8.26m at the Chinese Athletics Street Tour (Nanjing stop), and won the national athletics championships in August with 8.24m; he is currently ranked 12th in the world. What result will he produce amid the fierce competition at the Ultimate Championship?
We will wait and see.
