Is cross-country running headed for the Winter Olympics — good news?

These past two days, the hottest topic in the sports world has been the 2026 Milan Winter Olympics, which opened last week. As winter-sports fans enjoy the Olympic spectacle, the organizers have delivered some goodnews —the 2030 French Alps Winter Olympicsorganizingcommittee chair and Olympic champion Edgar Grospiron said in an interview that, the 2030 French Alps Winter Olympics will, for the first time, introduce the trail running discipline.

At first hearing, many people might wonder: "Does it feel odd for trail running, which doesn't belong with ice and snow, to be included in the Winter Olympics?" But there is a logic behind this move.

French Alps Winter OlympicsOrganizingCommittee chairmanGros Pillon explained, the events will take place around the Alps, creating a wide-ranging venue stretching from the coast of Niceto Mont Blanc, and will feature distinct competitions arranged by altitude:High-altitude areas above 2,500 meters will focus on freestyle freeride skiing and ski mountaineering and otherextreme sports;1,0002,500-meter mid-altitude areas will continue classic Winter Olympic disciplines such as alpine skiing;and in 01,000-meter low-altitude areas, trail running androad and off-road cycling races will take the lead.

trail runningAs the flagship mountain sport, it was only natural for the organizers to single it out. Chamonix, France — at the foot of the Alps — already has a rich trail-running culture, which further bolsters the push to get trail running into the Olympics.

In 格罗斯皮龙's view, trail running's inclusion in the Winter Olympics fills the current gap where the Summer Olympics cannot accommodate mountain sports, not only making fuller use of the host regions but also drawing more attention to the Winter Olympics — which is always a plus for any event.

Historically, trail running appeared at the Summer Olympics in 1912, 1920 and 1924; its entry into the Winter Olympics this time can be seen as achieving a pioneering "winter-and-summer" milestone.

It is worth mentioning that in existing English reports about 格罗斯皮龙 the term used for trail running is "Cross-Country", which in many cases differs from what people commonly mean by trail running.

Cross-country race venues are typically relatively even grass or cinder tracks, and competitors often wear spikes. Elevation gain is generally mild, with climbs under about 10 meters per kilometer, making the vertical difficulty slightly higher than courses such as the Boston Marathon. Race distances typically range from 3–12 kilometers, and courses are often 2 km looped circuits.

Trail refers to natural, wild singletrack with more technically challenging surfaces and greater elevation changes, participants wear trail shoes. Its distances are longer than Cross-Country, typically ranging from 10 kilometers up to 100 kilometers, and even 100-mile events, elevation gain per kilometer is typically over 50 meters, much higher than Cross-Country.

Including reports over the past two years in which World Athletics president Sebastian Coe mentioned adding trail running to the Winter Olympics, the English wording used was also Cross-Country.

However, taking into account the terrain around the Alps, and the low-altitude zone of 0—1000 meters that Geluosipilong referred to the trail running needing to “cover”, perhaps it will blend Cross-Country style with trail running that has relatively reduced climbing difficulty and lower technical demands on the surface. In the end, how it will ultimately present itself to everyone — let's quietly await the forthcoming reveal.

As for the venue of the trail running event, the organizing committee has not yet disclosed it, but given the Winter Olympics' overall hosting area, the "Alpine Arc", and Chamonix's dual identity as both a trail-running mecca and the host of the 1924 Winter Games,it seems highly likely that Chamonix will host the inaugural "Winter Olympic trail running" competition.

At the 2025 World Mountain and Trail Running Championships, Chinese trail runners unfortunately were unable to field a team. Once trail running becomes a Winter Olympics event, Chinese trail runners should have the opportunity to compete on the Olympic course for their country. This is undoubtedly good news for China's trail runners — we look forward to them charging through the Alpine peaks and posting strong results.
