15th National Games Athletics — Day 5: Liu Jingyang wins women's 100m hurdles, Wu Yanni second; Xiao Haijie secures double titles


November 19, the 15th National Games' athletics program held nine finals, including women's 100m hurdles, men's 110m hurdles, and the men's and women's 200m finals.


The high-profile women's 100m hurdles was fiercely contested, with the top three all under 13 seconds. Home favorite Liu Jingyang was impressive, taking gold for Guangdong with a PB of 12.81 seconds, sweeping away the shadow of the fall that cost her the title in a previous national grand prix.


Facing today's sudden drop in temperature, Liu Jingyang admitted she was worried before the race and said she isn't comfortable competing in cold conditions.


Sichuan's Wu Yanni took silver with a season-best 12.85 seconds. The defending champion, Fujian's Lin Yuwei, also ran a season-best 12.94 seconds to take bronze. Hunan's Xia Yuwei ran a season-best 13.12 seconds to finish fourth.



Shanghai performed strongly in their traditional strong event, the 110m hurdles. Xu Zhuoyi held off pressure from Jiangsu's Liu Junxi in the opening half and ultimately claimed the title by 0.02 seconds, taking gold in 13.12 seconds to extend Shanghai's dominance in the event. Liu Junxi took silver, and Hubei's Zhu Shenglong won bronze.



In the women's 200m final, Zhejiang's 16-year-old "Little Sister" Chen Yuxie showed her class, winning in 23.03 seconds and claiming both the women's 100m and 200m golds at the National Games — a hugely promising prospect for the future.


Hubei's Zhu Junying was almost flawless in the first half, but in the end she couldn't hang onChen Yuxie's final sprint secured the silver. Jiangsu's Cai Yanting took the bronze. One of the pre-race favorites, Liu Yinglan, fell midway and withdrew from the fight for the top three.




In the men's 200m final, Guangdong swept the top two spots,Shi Junhao was in hot form, running away in the final to win the gold in 20.30 seconds,Lin Jianhao took silver.Guan Xin of Chongqing won bronze.


Zhejiang veteran Xie Zhenye finished seventh overall in 20.98 seconds.



Women's long jump final, the top three all produced season bests, Jiangsu team's Tan Mengyi and Fujian team's Huang Yingying both jumped 6.54 m,Tan Mengyi, with the second-best mark of 6.42 mclaimed the title.

Huang Yingying finished second.Shanghai's Chen Liwen took bronze with 6.39 m.


The defending champion, Shandong's Feng Bin reached 65.10 m on his first throw, then grew stronger as the competition progressed, taking the lead with 65.46 m on his fourth attempt, which proved the winning throw and added another gold for Shandong.

Henan's Wang Fang set a new PB, taking silver with 62.30 m. Another Shandong athlete, Jiang Zhichao, threw 59.65 m to take bronze.


The women's high jump showdown came down to Shao Yuqi of Hubei and Lu Jiawen of Shanghai。Shao Yuqi cleared 1.90m on her third attempt, equalling her PB, and took the title.

Last edition's champion Lu Jiawen cleared 1.87m to take silver for Shanghai. Hu Linpeng of Hebei failed to clear 1.87m, but thanks to his earlier clean series he still claimed bronze.


In the men's pole vault final, traditional powerhouse Shandong continued its dominance, with Li Chenyang winning gold at 5.70m.

Huang Bokai of Guangdong failed at 5.70m, settling for silver with 5.65m. Zhong Tao of Anhui cleared 5.60m for bronze.


The final event of the women's heptathlon, the 800m, was run this evening. As the points leader, Zheng Ninali ran a steady race, clocking 2:19.52 to score 830 points,and with a total of 5922 points Zheng Ninali won gold for Shanxi, successfully defending her National Games title.

Zhejiang team’s Liu Jingyi took the silver medal, and another Zhejiang athlete, Xu Jiahua, won bronze.


The women's 4x400m relay heats were divided into two groups. In the first group, the Anhui team ran 3:38.50 to take the top spot by a large marginJiangsuteam and Chongqing team closely followed and advanced to the final.

The Shanghai team ran away in the second group, ranking first overall with a season-best 3:36.00,the Guangdong team, which rested Mo Jiadie, finished second in the heat, Guangxi team advanced in third,Hunan team and Zhejiang team advanced on time.The Sichuan team, which includes women's 400m champion Liu Yinglan, unfortunately failed to advance.

The final will start at 20:40 on November 20.


Men's 4x400m relay heats were fiercely contested, Guangdong team fielded its full-strength lineup to take first in the heat in 3:06.85, Zhejiang turned the tables on Anhui on the final leg with Shandong close behind, and Anhui advanced as the heat's third qualifier.

The second heat set a quicker pace, with the Tianjin team sprinting past Jiangsu and Sichuan just before the line to place first overall in 3:05.45. Jiangsu and Sichuan advanced together. The fourth- and fifth-placed teams from this heat, Hebei and Chongqing, advanced on time, edging out Shandong, the fourth-placed team from the first heat.

The final will start at 20:55 on November 20.
