Just a Trail EVO 3? The Agravic Speed Ultra EVO Is More Complicated Than It Looks

When it comes to "EVO" in running shoes, you probably think of Sawei's "sub‑2 battle shoe" and a series of racing models that could be called "record smashers" — but EVO seemed to exist only on the road.

This year, during the UTMB finals, an "EVO" also appeared on the trails — the AGRAVIC SPEED ULTRA EVO (hereafter AGRAVIC EVO).

The shoe's exterior design is based on the "sub‑2" road shoe ADIZERO ADIOS PRO EVO 3 (hereafter EVO 3).

They not only look similar; the midsole geometry and configuration also borrow inspiration from the EVO 3, deliberately targeting improved running economy for trail runners and addressing their desire to go "faster."

Starting with appearance: an oversized three‑stripes logo that extends onto the midsole, very pronounced forefoot and rearfoot rockers, and a faint "carbon ring" structure visible in the midsole sandwich are common to both.

In practice, there are differences too — mainly in midsole foam and plate configuration, and in upper design.

As a trail racing shoe, durability must come first. Midsole tear resistance and resistance to compression, plus outsole puncture resistance, make its design quite different from road racing shoes.

The AGRAVIC EVO uses LIGHTSTRIKE PRO foam, tuned softer and springier overall but with higher material density and a "protective coating" layer.

By contrast, the EVO 3's LIGHTSTRIKE PRO EVO foam is proper "foam" — unprotected, with visible foam cells and effectively no durability to speak of.

The AGRAVIC EVO's outsole uses a full‑length Continental rubber lug design, but the rubber actually only covers the medial forefoot — the core area where the big toe drives during push‑off. The rest is replaced by a thinner, lighter CPU material topped with a plastic film.

Together, this arrangement keeps weight down while still delivering credible puncture resistance.

The plate design is completely different as well. The AGRAVIC EVO's ENERGY RIM behaves more like "two carbon strips," one along each side of the shoe. That raises flexibility under a stability constraint and also permits more foam volume for greater spring and cushioning.

The EVO 3, meanwhile, uses a true "ring" that stabilizes and propels across the whole midsole plane, but it lacks the longitudinal flexibility of the former.

Both uppers use mono‑yarn material.

The AGRAVIC EVO's upper is more robust to resist scrapes from branches and rocks; a heat‑pressed suede reinforcement runs from the heel/ankle to the forefoot flex point to improve lateral lockdown; the heat‑pressed three‑stripes are also stiffer to boost lateral protection. The EVO 3, by comparison, is "as light as a cicada's wing."

However, the collar material on the AGRAVIC EVO's sock‑like construction has limited stretch and a small opening — take care when putting them on.

Would you pay top dollar for an "EVO" built for the trails?
