Your IRONMAN 70.3 Dali race tips to help you finish

On September 13, 2026, the 2026 IRONMAN 70.3 Yunnan Dali will kick off.

As another highly anticipated IRONMAN 70.3 event in China, Dali’s biggest appeal may be its unique race environment: Erhai Lake, Cangshan, highland blue skies, and a 113 km course that winds through natural scenery.

Beyond the scenery, there are also several race details worth noting.

Compared with flatland races, the Dali stop not only requires adaptation to high-altitude conditions, but also uses an A–B swim route, a three-lap bike course, and has the race-day transition area and swim start at different locations.

Ahead of the race, we’ve prepared a competitor guide to familiarize you with the race procedures and help you make your final preparations.

01

Remember these timing details.

·Before the race

Athlete check-in and race pack collection
September 11, 2026 10:00–18:00
September 12, 2026 09:00–16:30
Location: Dali International Olympic Sports Center

All athletes must check in in person with valid identification and collect their race pack, timing chip, and other race materials.

Important notes:No athlete check-in will be accepted on race day.Therefore, whether you arrive in Dali early or travel in on race weekend, you must complete check-in by 16:30 on September 12, 2026; otherwise you will not be permitted to compete.

Bike and transition-bag check-in
September 12, 2026 09:00–17:00
Location: East side of Dali Erhai Science Education Center (Erhai North Road section)

Bikes and transition gear required for the race must be brought into the transition area in advance for check-in.

After 17:00 the transition area will close; athletes who have not completed bike check-in will not be able to participate in the race.Please don't leave things until the last minute.

The day before the race it's best to complete in advance: check tire pressure; adjust gears and brakes; stow energy gels and water bottles; confirm cycling and running transition gear.

Swim trial
September 12, 10:00–12:00
Location: Erhe Forest Park

The swim trial is limited to athletes who have completed check-in and are wearing their timing chip. For athletes participating in the Dali event for the first time, the trial is very important. Besides getting used to the water temperature in advance, it's even more important to become familiar with the open-water environment.

·Race Day (September 13)

Transition area opens
5:30-7:15
Location: East side of Dali Erhai Science Education Center

Athletes can perform final checks, including: bicycle tire pressure; water bottle refills; energy gel preparation; transition gear confirmation.

This is the last chance for athletes to check tire pressure, water bottles, energy gels and other items — don't wait until you're 2 km into the ride to find your tire is flat.

Shuttle buses
6:00-7:20
On race day, the organizing committee will provide shuttle buses from the transition area to the swim start.
Boarding point: Suoshui Pavilion Square (Erhe North Road under Xingsheng Bridge)
Drop-off point: Ethnic Culture Square (Erhe North Road section)

Morning bag drop
6:00-8:00
Location: Ethnic Culture Square

Race start
8:00 — age-group rolling start.

At the Dali stop you need: transition-area check → take the shuttle → drop off your morning clothes bag → wait for departure. Allow plenty of time for the whole process.On race day, don’t follow the usual triathlon habit of arriving at the swim start only half an hour early.

02

Swim: navigation matters more than speed

IRONMAN 70.3 Dali swim distance is 1.9 km.Unlike many buoy-lap races, this swim uses an A-to-B route: athletes start at an upstream location on the Xier River, swim downstream toward the finish, and exit at the swim exit.

This route reduces the number of buoy turns, making it relatively friendly for age-group athletes.But in open water the biggest enemy is often not distance but navigation.

Many athletes who are fast in the pool can drift off course in a race because of the lack of reference points.Therefore we recommend:

(1) Regularly lift your head to sight and check your direction;
(2) Don’t rely entirely on the swimmer next to you;
(3) Adjust your line in advance around turns. Especially at mass starts, avoid swimming too close to others to prevent collisions.

Rolling start: choose your zone according to your true ability

The Dali stop uses zoned rolling starts. Athletes enter different zones based on expected swim time; individual race time begins when they cross the timing mat.

We advise against entering a zone clearly above your ability just to get in the water earlier.The most important things in the swim are: maintain rhythm, reduce contact, and reach T1 in a stable condition.

The swim cut-off is 1 hour 10 minutes from an individual's start.

03

Bike:Consistent output is the key.

After completing the swim, athletes will head into the90 km bike leg.The bike course at the Dali stop is generally flat:

·Total distance approximately90 km;
·Total elevation gain approximately197 m;
·Three laps in total.

The course runs along Erhai Lake, and the riding environment is well suited to maintaining a steady power output.

IRONMAN 70.3 The race's main characteristic is: the more aggressively you ride the bike, the higher the price you'll pay in the run. Especially in a high-altitude environment, recovery may differ from races on the plains.It is recommended that for the first30 km you control your pace — don't, because of the scenery or good road conditions, ride yourself into the“red zone”。

Plan your fueling strategy in advance

There are two aid stations set on the bike course.

Aid station supplies include:water; electrolyte drinks; energy gels; energy bars; bananas; ice sponges; etc.

If your goal is simply to finish, you can rely on the official aid stations to reduce what you carry; if you're aiming for a performance, you need to plan your fluid and energy intake in advance.

Note: Drafting on the bike is prohibited.IRONMAN 70.3 This is a non-drafting race. During the bike leg riders must maintain the required distance; overtaking must be done on the left. Drafting, illegal passing, and similar violations may be penalized.

Also, littering is prohibited. Gel wrappers, bottles, etc. may only be discarded in designated areas; otherwise you may receive a time penalty or even be disqualified.

04

Run: the final section along the Erhai Ecological Corridor21.1kilometres

After completing90 km of cycling, what ultimately awaits athletes is21.1 kilometre run.

The run course is located near the Erhai Ecological Corridor. Overall route:

·Total distance21.1 kilometres;
·Two laps;
·Primarily on paved roads;
·The course is generally quite flat.

In terms of scenery, this may be the most enjoyable section of the Dali race. But for most age-group athletes, the real challenge isn't the gradient—it's that the body is already fatigued after the swim and bike.

So the most important strategy for the run: don't sprint off the bike. Let your body settle into running rhythm for the first few kilometres, monitor heart rate and leg condition, then decide whether to pick up the pace.

Many IRONMAN70.3 races, the real separation comes in the final run10 kilometres: when others fade, you can maintain an even pace.

Don't miss the run aid stations.

Multiple aid stations will be set up during the run. Provided: water; electrolyte drinks; energy gels; bananas; cola; ice sponges, etc.

Dali9 There may still be strong sunlight during the month.Sun protection, cooling and hydration are equally important.Don't wait until you're clearly thirsty to hydrate; the second half of the race requires proactive management of your condition.

From the leap into the West Er River, to completing along Erhai Lake90 kilometres of cycling, then finally21.1 kilometres to run to the finish. IRONMAN 70.3The Dali stop of IRONMAN 70.3 is not just a race; it's a journey for Ironman athletes.

There are no extreme climbs and no complicated routes here, but the high-altitude environment, race pacing and attention to detail will all be important factors determining the final result.Prepare well; control your pace.

9 Month13 Day, see you in Dali!
