On (昂跑) recently launched its latest-generation flagship racing shoe — the Cloudboom Strike 2.
It has been upgraded in structure, foam tuning, and upper, creating a clear contrast with the previous generation.
Structure:
This generation no longer uses On (昂跑)'s signature CloudTec cushioning; instead it adopts the new CloudTec Sphere midsole structure technology.
Compared with the relatively "thin" forefoot foam of the previous model, the second generation uses this structure to make the forefoot foam noticeably "fuller", improving comfort and feedback on landing and during toe-off.
Additionally, the structure's two "cross-shaped" longitudinal and transverse grooves at fore and aft make the forefoot flex very freely compared with many top carbon-plated racers today. Compared with the first generation's traditional forefoot layout, the CloudTec Sphere midsole structure also improves running efficiency to some degree.
Midsole foam:
The Cloudboom Strike 2 still uses On (昂跑)'s top Helion HF foam; softness has increased while rebound recovery speed remains the same, and it's 15% lighter than the previous generation.
The second generation's one-piece midsole inevitably gives a more balanced underfoot feel; the first generation used a two-layer foam in the rearfoot to accommodate the CloudTec cushioning.
Notably, neither generation uses the traditional "sandwich" construction found in plate shoes — i.e., foam–plate–foam in the midsole.
Currently both Cloudboom Strike generations place the carbon plate directly beneath a removable midsole made of Helion HF foam (which also serves as an insole), so the plate sits closer to the foot and delivers a more direct propulsion feel.
At the same time, the outsole rubber on the second generation is more substantial; the first generation had a "stepped" midfoot design. Runners who land on the rearfoot will find a much better fore‑aft transition on the second generation.
Another reason the Cloudboom Strike 2 and the first generation "don't look like they're from the same family" is their uppers.
Upper:
The second generation's one-piece engineered mesh upper resembles a rugged Flyknit-style knit, achieving weight savings while ensuring breathability. Some may worry about upper support and durability; don't — the upper includes "cage-like" heat-pressed reinforcements.
Compared with the first generation's high-strength mono-yarn upper, the second generation's upper offers a clear improvement in breathability and stretch.
The Cloudboom Strike 2 standard edition is already on sale; the LightSpray version is tentatively scheduled for release in October.
Are you looking forward to this new-structure top carbon racing shoe?
