Salomon's S/LAB GENESIS has long been a winning weapon for many professional athletes and the race shoe of choice for elite amateur runners. Its excellent stability and traction, quick responsiveness and ample cushioning make it a decisive tool for creating gaps on technical terrain, while providing a "comfortable cruise" for middle- and long-distance races. But it's been four years since the original S/LAB GENESIS debuted, and many fans may find themselves wondering when their trusty partner will get a next-generation update. At this year's Chongli 168 trail race, the S/LAB GENESIS 2 took wins in the 30km, 70km and 100km categories, bringing the shoe into the public eye. The Matryx® Micro upper, compared to the previous Matryx® upper, incorporates Kevlar fibers (the main material used in bulletproof vests), increasing upper strength a notch. The midsole uses a dual-foam setup: the forefoot features the latest supercritical foam optiFOAM SQUARED alongside a full-length optiFOAM, delivering efficient forefoot rebound and stable cushioning through the mid/rearfoot. The outsole adds more lugs around the midfoot and widens the midfoot outsole area; overall outsole contact area is 39% greater than the previous generation. Lug depth remains the same at 4.5mm, but the lug pattern has shifted from trapezoidal to a herringbone design. The improved grip should make it easier to handle more technical terrain. That larger outsole contact area naturally affects weight: the S/LAB GENESIS 2 is 14g heavier than the previous model. Overall, the new S/LAB GENESIS 2 offers stronger traction and a softer, more springy—more aggressive—ride. When it comes to feel, runners are likely to split into two camps: lighter runners tend to prefer a softer, bouncier ride, while heavier runners often favor a lighter, firmer shoe.
