Salomon's S/LAB GENESIS has long been a go-to weapon for many pro athletes and the race choice for elite amateur runners.
Its excellent stability and grip, quick responsiveness and ample cushioning make it a decisive tool for creating gaps on technical sections and give mid- to long-distance races a "comfortable cruise" foundation.
However, the original S/LAB GENESIS debuted four years ago — many fans of the shoe might wonder when their trusted companion will see a next generation.
At this year's Chongli 168 Trail Race, the S/LAB GENESIS 2 took first place in the 30km, 70km and 100km categories. That performance brought the shoe into broader public view.
The Matryx® Micro upper, compared with the previous-generation Matryx® upper, adds Kevlar fibers (the primary material in bulletproof vests), boosting upper strength to the next level.
The midsole uses dual-layer foam technology: the forefoot features the latest supercritical foam optiFOAM SQUARED + a full-length optiFOAM, delivering efficient forefoot rebound and stable cushioning through the mid/rearfoot.
The outsole mainly adds more lugs in the midfoot area, and the midfoot outsole surface is wider; the shoe's overall outsole contact area is 39% greater than the previous generation.
Lug depth remains the same as the previous generation at 4.5mm, but the tread pattern has been changed from a trapezoid to a chevron shape. The improved grip will make it easier to handle more technical terrain.
But the larger outsole contact area inevitably affects weight. The S/LAB GENESIS 2 is 14g heavier than the previous generation.
In short, the new S/LAB GENESIS 2 offers stronger traction and a softer, springier, more aggressive responsiveness.
When it comes to how the new and old models feel, runners will likely split into two camps: one group (typically lighter runners) seeks a softer, bouncier feel, while the other group (typically heavier runners) prefers a lighter, more resilient shoe.
The S/LAB GENESIS 2 will go on sale in early August — would you be interested in trying this new "champion race shoe"?
